Week 4 Roundup: First Month Analysis Edition

So, at the end of last season, I added a few more analysis metrics to the spreadsheet in which I make the graph. I don't think it's worth posting every week like I do with the graph but I got the idea to post it every 4 weeks or once a month. So, as we have reached the 4th week in the season, in addition to posting the first points graph (which I will post every week) I am going to post a few of the other analytics metrics I have been keeping as well. Those will be posted at the end of the post since it wouldn't make sense to post them before the standings portion.

As for other news. Yahoo is still donking as Pgastan FC is still missing a techy from Randle. So with all that out of the way, lets get to this week's post!

Stat Corrections:

Being 4 weeks into the season we are also able to see some patterns in the standings and teams have begun to separate themselves in different tiers. F'N FLOPPERS is clearly the worst team in the league (this is what happens when you miss the NFA draft). They are the only foul club to not make it to 1000 points as of yet. They had a horrible week of only 165 points but let's see if the roster moves they made help out.

In the next tier from the bottom (I guess this would be tier 2) we have 5 foul clubs bunched up between 4th and 8th. Arlington Assaulters is still in 8th place after an average week of 335 points. My sources tell me their president was on their honeymoon so that may be why they had just an average week but you would think they would have more than just one person in their front office.

Gamblor falls from 4th place to a tie in 6th place after a poor week of 245 points. Also tied in 6th place is Baltimore Hitsquad who had a great week of 405 points and moves up 1 spot from 7th. My sources tell me their club president had a chance to watch the Jazz/Nets game in Salt Lake City last week for some quality foul scouting but passed on the opportunity. We'll see if that comes back to haunt them this week or later on in the season. He could have discovered the next great fouler. You always have to watch some fouling if you get the chance especially if you don't live in a city with a first division foul club.

Ohsnappers!!! had a great week of 400 points and moves from 6th place to 5th place. Rounding out the 2nd tier of Foul Clubs is Oww Ming's Flagrants who also had a great week of 455 points and moves from 5th place to 4th place.

In the 1st tier we have Rodman'sWeddingDress who had an amazing week of 625 points but stays in 3rd place. In 2nd place we have Pgastan FC who had a great week of 475 points but stays in 2nd place. And finally, in 1st place we have GG Foulin' who had an amazing week of 745 points which makes it back to back weeks of 700+ points. Right now Pgastan FC and Rodman'sWeddingDress are in the same tier as GG Foulin' but if he can keep this up he may separate himself from the field.

Average Points Per Game:
The first metric I am going to post is Average Points per game in the order of the current standings

Most of the average points is to be expected as you would think it should go be decreasing from 1st to 9th but one foul club stands out and that would be Gamblor. Gamblor should be in 4th place by average points per game but as you can see they have played 9 to 13 games fewer than the Foul Clubs ahead of them so if they can make up those games they should climb the standings.

Below are the projected final standings as we are 15.7% done with the season. This will be fun to come back to each month and at the end of the season. Projected final standings are rounded to the closest 5 points (i.e. closest personal foul).

So a few things to note. As this stands, F'N FLOPPERS is on pace to destroy the all-time low score in an NFA Season which was set by Hoopin' Sabercats at 6,670 set in 2012-2013. Likewise, both Pgastan FC and GG Foulin' are on pace to break Rodman'sWeddingDress all-time high of 13,470 set in 2010-2011 with Rodman'sWeddingDress getting close to his own record as well.

Week 3 Roundup: Yahoo Donking Edition

So, we finally got Yahoo! to add Giannis Foul Outs (more in the stat corrections) when Julius Randle had a flagrant and technical foul last Wednesday that appeared in live scoring. However, in the morning there were issues with fantasy basketball and nothing was updated until about 9 AM eastern. When the update finally came in, Randle's techy and flaggy were missing! All other performance fouls for that night (and there were a lot) seemed to be accounted for. So Pgastan FC was missing 120 points. As the commish, I contacted Yahoo! and after like 1.5 days they got the flagrant in but the techy is still missing as of this post. I contacted them a few days ago to see where the techy was but have not heard back. Hopefully, the techy is there and will get added in a week or so unless the NBA rescinded it. I don't believe they have but it is hard to find foul stats on box scores online for some reason.

There was some movement in the standings this week so let's get into the recap. F'N Floppers had a poor week of 290 points and stays in last place. Arlington Assaulters had average week of 345 points and fell all the way from 5th to 8th place. Baltimore Hitsquad had a great week of 445 points but actually falls one spot from 6th to 7th. Ohsnappers!!! had an excellent week of 555 points and climbs from 8th place to 5th place.

Gamblor had an average week of 395 points and stays in 4th place Rodman'sWeddingDress had a great week of 405 points and stays in 3rd place. Pgastan FC had a great week of 460 points and drops out of 1st place to 2nd place (though he is probably missing 40 points). Finally, GG Foulin' had an amazing week of 790 points and moves from 2nd place to 1st place.

Pretty impressive. It only took 2 weeks for everyone to get a performance foul and Pgastan FC and Rodman'sWeddingDress already fouled for the season cycle as of October 30th, which happens to be just the 8th day of the season. That cycle comes courtesy of Joel Embiid's ejection after he got into a fight with Karl-Anthony Towns. Rodman'sWeddingDress achieved his cylce a few hours later when Aron Baynes got a flagrant.

Week 1 Roundup: Disappearing Foul Out Edition

We are back! The 2019-2020 NFA season is officially underway. I didn't feel like posting a draft recap this year so this is the first post of the year. Though, I will say that everyone but F'N Floppers made the draft. As I started with last season, I am going to do the performance foul tracker instead of the points graph for the first few weeks as I won't post the points graph until like week 4.

So, what about the blog post title you ask? Well, Giannis Antetokounmpo fouled out in both of his first 2 games and was correctly credited with 6 personal fouls and initially the foul out, but after the first one the foul out mysteriously disappeared at some point in the morning/afternoon the day after. It usually gets fixed so I thought nothing of it but it wasn't fixed come Saturday,, so I contacted Yahoo! and they said it should get fixed. So, his 2nd game was Saturday night and he fouls out and the live scoring was correct but come Sunday morning the foul out was once again gone. So, being the good commissioner that I am, I contacted Yahoo! again to try and get this resolved. They said they have passed it onto their engineers so hopefully it gets rectified soon but I have not seen it in the stat corrections yet.

TL;DR summary: GG Foulin' is missing 120 points so he really should be in first after the first week, but more on that later.

Ohsnappers!!! had a horrible week only putting up 170 points and starts the season in last place. Baltimore Hitsquad had a poor week of 205 points and starts the year in 8th place. F'N Floppers, who was the only Foul Club to miss the draft put up a respectable average week of 300 points despite making no transactions yet and starts in 7th place. Arlington Assaulters had an average week of 370 points and begins in 6th place. Gamblor had a great week of 425 and starts in 5th place.

Oww Ming's Flagrants had a great week of 440 points and starts in 4th place.Rodman'sWeddingDress had an excellent week 565 points and starts in 3rd place. GG Foulin' had an excellent week with 585 points and starts in 2nd place (though given the 2 missing foul outs he should really be in 1st place with 705 points which would be an amazing week). NFA 2018-2019 Champion Interview

As I mentioned in the End of the Season Donkies, I was able to catch up with the GM of Pgastan FC for an interview to reflect on his championship. Enjoy!

Foul Master (FM): After being one of the NFA founding members and winning 2 of the first 4 titles including the very first, but suffering a few down years lately, how does it feel to be back on top?

Pgastan FC (PFC): It feels good, Johnny, thanks for asking.

FM: Johnny? I've actually never revealed my name on this blog.

PFC: Oh, you just seemed like a Johnny to me. Anyway, it feels great to be back on top with my 3rd title. Like you said, I was a huge force in the beginning of the league but then it seemed liked other foul clubs got better at player evaluation so my competition got harder.

FM: So what did you do to improve your player evaluation to get back on top?

PFC: Glad you asked, Johnny, it's actually a very interesting story. It was the 2015-2016 season and I wanna say it was like mid-December. My team had just bottomed out to 7th place out of the 8 Foul Clubs. I was like, "there's gotta be a better way to evaluate talent in the NFA." So, inspired by analytics in other sports, I decided to create my own database of the previous 2 years of stats. I was able to identified free agents that could immediately help my Foul Club and they did as I finished in 3rd place.

FM: Do you have a name for your method?

PFC: Yes, I call it Foulerball. I know, I know, it's suspiciously similar to Moneyball. 

FM: Did you use Foulerball this season?

PFC: Yes, I have been using it for the last 3 seasons, but it took a few years for me to tweak my draft strategy in order to fully capitalize on the data.

FM: Do you know of any other Foul Clubs using analytics?

PFC: During this year's draft, Oww Ming's Flagrants, last year's champion, mentioned that he does Foulerball. It was him drafting a rookie that made me look into it on the spot during the draft. I went with Harry Giles initially but then dropped him for Jaren Jackson Jr. because he was getting more playing time. JJJ, was a top 5 fouler until his injury in March, definitely helped me to the title.

FM: Will you draft rookies going forward? Why did you never draft a rookie before?

PFC: Well, I'll answer the second part first. That's simply because the lack of data, but was able to find a little bit of info on college foul stats somewhere and took my chance. I will definitely look into rookies again and maybe even take a chance on one if the draft value is right.

FM: How would you grade your draft looking back on it?

PFC: Well, Foulerball led me to Patrick Beverely as an elite fouler and he goes on to be MVF this year, so that was amazing. I even whiffed on my 1st round pick, Julius Randle, who had an OK season but I was debating between Andre Drummond and him for that pick and went with Randle due to his previous season's performance. Though, if i draft Drummond, I am not sure I draft Blake Griffin as I like to diversify by not having too many foulers on the same NBA team. I probably could have challenged for NFA all-time score had I drafted Drummond along with Beverley.

FM: You finished 2nd in fouls, 3rd in foul outs, 1st in techies (by a lot), 3rd in ejections, and tied for 7th in flagrants. Are you satisfied with your team stats?

PFC: Yes I am, Johnny, I say, it aligned well with my draft strategy and Foulerball database. It's how I have chosen to evaluate Foulers.

FM: So since you started Foulerball, you have finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd, and 1st in the league, does this prove that analytics has a place in the NFA?

PFC: Oh yeah, I think it does. It really shows that talent evaluation can make a difference. It's going to depend on other Foul Clubs and if they want to hire the right staff to build analytics departments to compete with myself and Oww Ming. Though GG Foulin' seems to know his stuff anyway somehow, so he is a threat should he choose to stay in the league.

In Fact, I just finished updating my database to reflect this past season and already noticing a few things different, plus looking at different ways to evaluate Foulers.

FM: Different ways?

PFC: Well, Oww Ming alluded to evaluating foulers per 48 minutes while I focused on normalizing to the game. I have added minutes into my database just to give me another way of looking at talent.

FM: Your team kind of limped to the title though, any comments on that?

PFC: Well, when Jaren Jackson Jr. went down that was brutal for my foul club. DeAndre Jordan getting traded and not getting a ton of playing time hurt too. Also, a bench Flagrant 2 ejection from Marcus Smart in the 3rd to last week would have helped make the end less of a sweat had I started him that week. Luckily, my team was so good for the first 4.5 months that I was able to withstand a lull in the last 4 or so weeks.

FM: Anything else you want to add?

PFC: Not really, just glad Foulerball is finally getting the respect it deserves.

FM: Great, congratulations on your 3rd title!

PFC: Thanks, Johnny!

This was definitely the year of the Guard with the top 2 foulers being Beverely and Westbrook. Also, it seems liked scoring was up with 7 foulers not only breaking 2000 points but the top 3 breaking 2400 points which I don't believe has ever happened. Also, there were a lot of foul outs this year with top 9 having 6 or more where the top 3 finishers last year had 6.

I was able to catch up with the GM for Pgastan FC during the awards banquet tonight for an interview so check back in a few days as he reflects on his most recent championship and talks analytics.

2018-2019 NFA Season Recap

Wow, so we just concluded the 10th season of the National Foul Association! Can't believe it's been that long. From our humble beginnings of just 6 foul clubs with only 3 of them playing attention for the first few seasons (though the league was 8 teams then 7 teams in the 2nd and 3rd season) to having 9 Foul Clubs all make it to the draft this year in one of our most competitive seasons ever! It's been a long journey to get here so let's see how the final season finished out.

I am going to update the NFA All-Time Standings here now. First introduced in last year's NFA Season recap.

5 of the 9 teams are averaging over 10,000 points per season. Though it should be noted that GG Foulin' has only competed in 2 seasons but is averaging over 12,000 points. Only time will tell if he can keep that pace up.

Let's get to the recap of this final, short, 3-day week of the NFA Season.

Stat Corrections:
- Mitchell Robinson had a techy taken away from him retroactive to March 28th. GG Foulin' did not have him active that week so he does not lose 40 points.
- Russell Westbrook had a techy taken away from him retroactive to March 31st. Gamblor had him active that week so he loses 40 points.
- Brook Lopez had a techy taken away from him retroactive to April 1st. F'N FLOPPERS had him active that week so he loses 40 points.


Final 2018-2019 NFA Standings:

Ohsnappers!!! finished the season at exactly 8000 points, a nice round number, after scoring 25 points in the last 2 game days. Baltimore Hitsquad only managed 20 points and thus falls to 8th place as Arlington Assaulters passes him up with 105 points this final week. F'N FLOPPERS managed 65 points and stays in 6th place. Gamblor was able to crack 10,000 points after scoring 135 points.

Rodman'sWeddingDress put up 195 points and stays in 4th place. Oww Ming's Flagrants scored 95 points to remain in 3rd place. GG Foulin's late charge continued putting up 170 points in the final short week but it proved too little too late as Pgastan FC holds on for his 3rd title after scoring 75 points this week. 

This is only the 2nd season in which 5 teams finished over 10,000 points. The other being 2012-2013 which was also won by Pgastan FC, his last title before this one.

We have a new record for foul outs in a season with 27 as Oww Ming's Flagrants breaks the old record of 25 held by Pgastan FC (2009-2010) and Rodman'sWeddingDress (2010-2011). Here is an updated recap of current season records:

It's interesting to note that Oww Ming's Flagrants finished in 3rd place despite finishing last in techies and last in Ejections. He finished 3rd in personal fouls, 1st in foul outs (mentioned above), and tied for 2nd in flagrants. This just shows you that there can be multiple ways to build a successful foul club. Both Pgastan FC and Oww Ming's Flagrants are known to use Foulerball (analytics) when building a foul squad so this just proves there is a place for it in the NFA.

Also interesting to note that GG Foulin' played the most games at 574 and finished 2nd while Champion Pgastan FC had 2nd most games at 553.Oww Ming's Flagrants had 549 games this season which ranks 3rd and he finished 3rd in the standings.  

Average Points Per Game: The order is the final standings.

You would think that the average points per game would directly correlate with the final standings but as you can see that's not the case. Let's see who was presumably lucky and who was unlucky. Ohsnappers!!! finsihed last and had the lost average so that fits. However, Baltimore Hitsquad average 19.04 points per game which would rank 6th out of 9 but he finished in 8th place.If he had more games played he could have finished higher up. Arlington Assaulters seems t have played to his team potential. F'N FLOPPERS looks to have gotten lucky with only 18.21 points per game, which is 8th but he finished 6th. 

Gamblor played to potential but it appears that Rodman'sWeddingDress should have finished in 3rd place after averaging 21.02 points (just behind GG Foulin') but he only had 512 games played whereas 3rd place Oww Ming's Flagrants had 549 which is 37 more games than Rodman'sWeddingDress.  

So what does this tell us? It tells us that both quality and quantity matter in the NFA.
