Week 5 Roundup: Bench Strength Edition

Well over the last few weeks a few Foul Club GMs have brought to my attention the lack of waiver wire strength and how hard it is to improve one's foul club post-draft (and basically post-week 2 of the NFA season). I mean I even posted about this in the Week 2 Roundup. It was brought up to me again last week by another GM and I had mentioned what I heard other GMs discussing.

I think there  are basically 2 options that we could do to adjust rosters that have come up during the last few weeks:

1. Decrease the number of bench spots from 3 to 2 or 1
2. Eliminate the UTIL positions to have only a starting 5.

Now, I think option 1 is the best if we chose to pursue any of this. If we go with option 2 and eliminate the UTIL spots then it becomes harder compare NFA seasons. Now granted the lockout and hte pandemic shortened season do not have the normal 82 games so maybe this isn't that big of a deal but one thing's for certain that it would lock Rodman'sWeddingDress as the all-time highest scoring NFA season in place. I think NFA teams have a right to challenge that record.

So what I am going to do now is go through each team's roster as of this post and look at their current Yahoo Rank for their 3 bench players to see if people are hoarding any good players:

Current Rank of Their 3 Bench Players:

1. Pgastan FC -35, 40, 50 (All of his bench players are injured and this isn't their normal bench. Normal bench for PFC would be 24, 39, 135)
2. Oww Ming's Flagrants - 17, 54, 55 (Dillon Brooks on bench because of COVID postponements. Oubre is ranked 41 who was on their bench yesterday)
3. GG Foulin' - 12, 27, 42
4. F'N FLOPPERS - 45, 145, 206
5. Baltimore Hitsquad -29, 37, 138
6. Gamblor -136, 165, 199
7. Arlington Assaulters -18, 21, 25 (Booker is injured an ranked 18th so his replacement is ranked 207 which would be more accurate)
8. Rodman'sWeddingDress -47, 89, 128
9. Ohsnappers!!! -13, 34 (Has empty bench spot, probably not checking their team)

So I started writing this on Friday and thought it was a good idea. However, I didn't think about injuries and COVID causing disruptions to Foul Clubs starting lineups so this may not be the best snapshot but still you can see some decent foulers on benches out there. Let the debate begin!

Now, let's get to this week's post.

Stat Corrections
- DeAndre Hunter had a Personal Foul taken away from him retroactive to January 18th. Pgastan FC had him active that week so he loses 5 points.

Transactions
- Arlington Assaulters added Terrence Ross and dropped Jarrett Allen on January 21st
- Oww Ming's Flagrants added Fred VanVleet and dropped JJ Reddick on January 21st
- GG Foulin' added Keldon Johnson on January 24th
- Baltimore Hitsquad added Damion Lee and dropped CJ McCollum on January 24th
- Pgastan FC added Garrett Temple and dropped PJ Washington on January 24th

Standings as of January 25th, 2021

1. Pgastan FC - 2510 (+490)
2. GG Foulin' - 2205 (+605)
3. Oww Ming's Flagrants - 2070 (+360)
4. Arlington Assaulters - 1840 (+590)
5. F'N FLOPPERS - 1755 (+230)
6. Baltimore Hitsquad - 1635 (+250)
7. Gamblor - 1605 (+320)
7. Rodman'sWeddingDress - 1605 (+555)
9. Ohsnappers!!! - 1080 (+195)

<= 195 points: Horrible week
200-295 points: Poor week
300-395 points: Average week
400-495 Points: Great Week
500-595 Points: Excellent Week
>=600 points: Amazing week

Ohsnappers!!! had a poor week of 195 points and stays in 9th place but does finally make it past the 1000 point threshold. Rodman'sWeddingDress had an excellent week of 555 points but only makes it to a tie for 7th place from 8th place. Gamblor had a an average week of 320 points and falls from 6th to a tie for 7th. Baltimore Hitsquad had a poor week of 250 points and falls one spot to 6th place F'N FLOPPERS had a poor week of 230 points and falls from 4th to 5th.

Arlington Assaulters had an excellent week of 590 points and moves all the way from 7th place to 4th place. This was done because of Mason Plumlee's week for the ages of 4 straight foul outs! That's a stat line of 365 (25-4-0-0-0). Not sure we've ever seen anything like that in NFA history for one fouler. We've had some big weeks before for a single fouler but that's usually due to an ejection or one big night not 4-straight games of production like this.

Oww Ming's Flagrants had an average week of 360 points and falls from 2nd to 3rd place. GG Foulin' had an amazing week of 605 points and moves up to 2nd from 3rd place. Finally, Pgastan FC remains in 1st place after a great week of 490 points.

Points Graph:

Tier 5: Ohsnappers!!!
Tier 4: Rodman'sWeddingDress, Gamblor, Baltimore Hitsquad
Tier 3: F'N FLOPPERS, Arlington Assaulters
Tier 2: Oww Ming's Flagrants, GG Foulin'
Tier 1: Pgastan FC

Looks like we had some change in the tiers. The graph shows 5 distinct tiers though if you were to look at the standings in tabular form you might break it down slightly different. I think you could argue that Tier 4 and 3 could be combined to one tier as well but there's some difference between the tiers when looking at it on a graph.

Well that's it for now

Keep Foulin' Y'all!

  1. I’m all good with reducing the bench to two spots. This is definitely an odd year with a lot of the postponed games. I trust the process and the ‘Mish!

    1. Yeah, eliminating a bench spot may be best. We'll see how this progresses. So many more knowledgeable NFA GMs nowadays. You can't just coast to victory like in the early years.
