Week 2 Roundup: Defensive 3-Second Violation Edition

As you may have read in my last post, Yahoo! is showing a techy for Defensive 3-second violations on stat donker but come morning, the techy is gone. I contacted Yahoo! this morning and they want me to take a screenshot the next time it happens and then email it to them, so they can have their engineer's look into it. I will forward the email I got from them to the league so everyone can see it. Anyway, let's take a look at what transpired this past week in the National Foul Association.

Stat Corrections
-J.R. Smith had a techy taken away from him retroactive to October 27th. Rodman'sWeddingDress had him active that week so he loses 40 points.

Standings as of November 9, 2015:

1. Arlington Assaulters- 950 pts (+525)
2. Oww Ming's Flagrants 770 (+385)
3. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 720 (+270)
3. They Call Me Gamblor- 720 (+375)
5. Pgastan FC- 670 (+400)
6. F'N FLOPPERS 560 (+300)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 535 (+290)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 515 (+340)

Arlington Assaulters puts up a league-leading 525 points this week to go 180 points clear of 2nd place. Oww Ming's Flagrants is pretty consistent through 2 weeks, putting up 385 points in both of the first 2 weeks of the season. After a 450 point week in week 1, Rodman'sWeddingDress only put up 270 points, which was the lowest this week, and is in a tie for 3rd at 720 points. The team tied with him is They Call Me Gamblor who had a decent 375 point week. Pgastan FC had a decent last few days in the week which was enough to get him 400 points for the week which was 2nd most this week. Unfortunately, he is still stuck in 5th. F'N FLOPPERS put up 300 points this week but remains in 6th. Ohsnappers!!! put up 290 but is still in 7th but within stirking distance of 6th. Finally, Baltimore Hitsquad has started really slow (very uncharacteristic of him) and remains in 8th but is slowly making ground on the rest of the Association.

It's a little early to start analyzing trends but so far it looks like we have the top half of hte league and the bottom half, though Arlington Assaulters had a huge day yesterday to gain some separation from 2nd and Pgastan FC had a good day yesterday to separate himself from 6th.

Transactions:
-Rodman'sWeddingDress added Kosta Koufos and dropped Tyler Hansborough on November 6th
-Pgastan FC added Greg Monroe and dropped Evan Turner on November 6th
-Pgastan FC added Carmelo Anthony and dropped Michael Carter-Williams on November 6th
-Rodman'sWeddingDress added Jameer Nelson and dropped Spencer Hawes on November 8th
-F'N FLOPPERS added Kristaps Porzingis and dropped Carlos Boozer on November 8th
-F'N FLOPPERS added Clint Capela and dropped Kendrick Perkins on November 8th

Well that's it for this week.

Yahoo! and the Curious Case of the Dissapearing Techy

It's only been 10 days since the start of the NFA season but already we have some confusion and last night was the latest example. Hassan Whiteside had a techy earlier in the game and then got into a little scuffle with Paul George where both were assessed techies. This resulted in Whiteside's 2nd techy of the night, or so it seemed. This happened to Vucevic on Wednesday night, where he had 2 techies but when we checked the league standings in the morning he had none!

So, since this is the 3rd time this has happened (I can't remember the player this happened to in the first week), I decided to do some sleuthing. The NBA box score lists 2 techies for Whiteside and Vucevic for this games but Yahoo!'s box score only lists one. I found a full play-by-play on cbssports.com and the techies in question appear to be defensive 3-second violations.

Now this is where I had to consult the NBA Rule book:

https://turnernbahangtime.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/2014-15-nba-rule-book.pdf

There are numerous ways one can be assessed a techy:
1. Excessive Timeouts
2. Delay of Game
3. Number of Players
4. Basket-Ring, Backboard, or Support
5. Conduct
6. Fighting Fouls

Now the rules say you can only be ejected for unsportsmanlike technical fouls and that:

"A technical foul for (1) delay of game, (2) coaches box violation, (3) defensive 3-seconds, (4) having a team total of more or less than 5 players when the ball becomes alive, (5) a player hanging on the basket ring or backboard, (6) participation in the game when not on the team's active list, or (7) shattering the backboard or making the rim unplayable during the game (Comments on the Rules---G) is not considered an act of unsportsmanlike conduct)."

So this answers why the players weren't ejected in their games but doesn't answer why Yahoo! isn't counting them as technical fouls... or does it? Yahoo! is probably only counting technical fouls for unsportsmanlike acts. What constitutes an unsportsmanlike act you say? Here is what it says in the Rule book:

"A technical foul shall be assess for unsportsmanlike tactics such as:
(1) Disrespectfully addressing an official
(2) Physically contacting an official
(3) Overt actions indicating resentment to a call
(4) Use of Profanity
(5) A coach entering onto the court without permission of an official
(6) A deliberately thrown elbow or any attempted physical contact with no contact involved
(7) Taunting"

You can read more on Technical fouls in the rule book starting at page 39

This actually makes sense as I would assume defensive 3-second violations happen pretty frequently and if that was the case there would be a lot more techies in NFA. Now why these techies are coming up in stat donker, I don't know but I think this answers all of our concerns for the most part. It just means it might be a little frustrating to track techies this season.

Check back Monday Night for the weekly roundup.

Week 1 Roundup: Before & After Edition

Since both Paul George and George Hill were picked up this week after coming out of the gate blazing (each with 2 techies in the first week), I kept thinking that would make a great Wheel of Fortune Before & After puzzle: Paul George Hill. Anyway, let's take a look at what transpired in the first week.

Stat Corrections:
There were no stat corrections in the first week of the season.

Standings as of November 2, 2015:

1. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 450 (+450)
2. Arlington Assaulters- 425 pts (+425)
3. Oww Ming's Flagrants 385 (+385)
4. They Call Me Gamblor- 345 (+345)
5. Pgastan FC- 270 (+270)
6. F'N FLOPPERS 260 (+260)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 245 (+245)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 175  (+175)

With all 8 teams returning from last season not much to update on the standings as we are only 6 days into the NFA season. However, Dis Is Dat Donk Ball did change its name to Ohsnappers!!!, we'll see if the aesthetic change does anything to motivate his foulers. Being that the NFA season has just and the crapshoot nature of NFA I will refrain from analysis this week as we wait for the dust to settle after the draft.

Transactions:
-Pgastan FC added Michael Carter-Williams and dropped OJ Mayo on October 26th
-Rodman'sWeddingDress added Tristan Thompson and dropped Joakim Noah on October 27th
-Ohsnappers!!! added OJ Mayo and dropped Jimmy Butler on October 29th
-Ohsnappers!!! added Joakim Noah and dropped Al Horford on October 29th
-Arlington Assaulters dropped Amar'e Stoudemire on November 1st
-Arlington Assaulters added Paul George and dropped Dion Waiters on November 1st
-Pgastan FC added George Hill and dropped Jason Smith on November 1st
-Ohsnappers!!! added Jared Sullinger and dropped Quincy Acy on November 1st
-Ohsnappers!!! added Hollis Thompson and dropped Kawhi Leonard on November 1st

Well, as you can see, 4 teams have made moves, Ohsnappers!!! being the most active as he was the one team that missed the draft and didn't pre-rank his foulers. We shall see how these moves pan out over the course of the NFA season.

Remember, the NFA is a marathon not a sprint.

BREAKING: First Trade in NFA History

Yesterday, the first trade in NFA History went official. Pgastan Foul Club and Arlington Assaulters were the two clubs to pull off the trade. PFC traded Tony Allen (SG, SF) since he had a glut of Shooting guards for Jason Smith (PF, C) from AA, as he was lacking SGs.

"Yeah, I'm just trying to build depth for my squad so they can handle the long grind of an NFA season" says, PFC Owner, CEO, GM, Manager, Assistant Coach, Trainer, and Ball Boy (It's a one man operation here).

Maybe this will finally open up the flood gates for more trades in the future. It took up until the beginning of the 7th season to get a trade in NFA.

2015-2016 NFA Draft Recap and Season Preview

The 7th annual NFA draft concluded earlier tonight. What will follow is a team by team draft recap with a season preview.

All 8-teams returned from last year so I will do this by draft order starting with the number 1 pick.

Oww Ming's Flagrants
Oww Ming's Flagrants won the DeMarcus Cousins lottery as he got the first pick. His team is:

PG- Eric Bledsoe (PG, SG)
SG- Kobe Bryant (SG, SF)
SF- Gainnis Antetokounmpo (SF, PF)
PF- DeMarcus Cousins (PF, C)
C- Willie Cauley-Stein (C)
Util- Chris Paul (PG)
Util- Paul Pierce (SF, PF)
BN- Jahlil Okafor (C)
BN- Taj Gibson (PF, C)
BN- Isiah Thomas (PG)

Pretty well rounded team for Oww Ming, doesn't appear too heavy on one position or another. Has to be preseason favorite simply because of Cousins.

Baltimore Hitsquad
The Hitsquad got the 2nd pick, here is how his team shapes up:

PG- Aaron Brooks (PG)
SG- Mario Chalmers (PG, SG)
SF- Wilson Chandler (SG, SF)
PF- Andre Drummond (PF, C)
C- Dwight Howard (PF, C)
Util- Jusuf Nurkic (C)
Util- Alex Len (C)
BN- Marresse Speights (PF, C)
BN- Andrew Bogut (C)
BN- Nene Hillario (C)

The Hitsquad surpirsingly took Durmmond over Morris at 2, but he is hoping the gamble pays off. He is loaded at Center, so he may need to drop a few players to get some depth at other positions. "Drummond is younger so he may be building to his prime" says the Hitsquad owner.

Pgastan FC

Pgastan FC, had the 3rd overall pick, so here is his team:

PG- Oj Mayo (PG, SG)
SG- Pj Tucker (SG, SF)
SF- Evan Turner (SG, SF)
PF- Markieff Morris (PF, C)
C- Kenneth Faried (PF, C)
Util- Jonas Valanciunas (C)
Util- Zach Randolph (PF, C)
BN- DeMar DeRozan (SG, SF)
BN- Enes Kanter (C)
BN- Tony Allen (SG, SF)

Pgastan FC's roster looks pretty well rounded too, though, only carrying 1 PG (but that tends to be common for Foul Clubs in the NFA). Perhaps, a little too heavy at SG, but all his SGs can play SF. On paper his team looks good, but we shall see once we start fouling.

They Call Me Gamblor

The 2-tiime defending runner-up had the 4th pick in the draft, is this finally his year? Let's take a look at his team:

PG- Russell Westbrook (PG)
SG- Lance Stephenson (SG, SF)
SF- Rudy Gay (SF, PF)
PF- Amir Johnson (PF, C)
C- DeAndre Jordan (C)
Util- Timofey Mozgov (C)
Util- Patrick Beverley (PG, SG)
BN- Gerald Henderson (SG, SF)
BN- Kelly Olynyk (C)
BN- Andrew Wiggins (SG, SF)

Gamblor has a really balanced lineup from a position standpoint and looks to have decent techy potential by most of his players.  He went with Point Guard for his first round pick, always a risky play, just ask Pgastan FC who took Kyle Lowry 3rd overall last year but finished fifth in the league.

Rodman'sWeddingDress

The defending champ (and winner of 3 of the first 6 NFA seasons) had the 5th overall pick, so let's evaluate his team.

PG- Goran Dragic (PG, SG)
SG- JR Smith (SG, SF)
SF- Draymond Green (SF, PF)
PF- Blake Griffin (PF, C)
C- Joakim Noah (PF, C)
Util- Hassan Whiteside (C)
Util- Marcus Smart (PG)
BN- Tyler Hansborough (PF,C)
BN- Spencer Hawes (PF, C)
BN- Nikola Mirotic (SF, PF)

The defending champ looks to have a formidable team going with Blake Griffin at 5 overall and then Draymond Green for his 2nd round pick.

Ohsnappers!!!

Ohsnappers!!! missed the draft and did not pre-rank his foulers:

PG- Stephen Curry (PG, SG)
SG- James Harden (SG, SF)
SF- Kevin Durant  (SF, PF)
PF- Anthony Davis (PF, C)
C- Al Horford (PF, C)
Util- LeBron James (SF, PF)
Util- Kawhi Leonard (SG, SF)
BN- Carmelo Anthony (SF,PF)
BN- Jimmy Butler (SG, SF)
BN- Klay Thomson (SG, SF)

Easily has the weakest team on paper, but that's what happens when you miss the NFA draft. Let's see if he can manage his way up the standings.

Arlington Assaulters

Arlington Assaulters, who finished in 4th last season by a mere 5 points, had the 7th of 8 picks in the NFA draft. Let's take a look at his team:

PG- Kyle Lowry (PG)
SG- Dion Waters (SG, SF)
SF- Matt Barnes  (SF)
PF- Marcus Morris (SF, PF)
C- Tyson Chandler (C)
Util- Nikola Vucevic (PF, C)
Util- Steven Adams (C)
BN- Ed Davis (PF, C)
BN- Jason Smith (PF, C)
BN- Amar'e Stoudemire (PF, C)

Arlington Assaulters reluctantly took Matt Barnes 7th overall, which may be surprising given that he scored over 2000 points last year. AA appears to be Center heavy as well. With Stoudemire injured, AA is the first team to utilize the Injured List (IL) Spot. He placed Stoudemire on the IL and picked up Paul Millsap (PF, C).

F'N FLOPPERS

F'N FLOPPERS had the 8th and final pick in the 7th Annual NFA draft. Let's look at his team:

PG- John Wall (PG)
SG- Ben McLemore (SG)
SF- Josh Smith (SF, PF)
PF- Serge Ibaka (PF, C)
C- Roy Hibbert (C)
Util- Jason Thompson (PF, C)
Util- Marc Gasol (C)
BN- Nerlens Noel (PF, C)
BN- Kendrick Perkins (C)
BN- Carlos Boozer (PF, C)

F'N FLOPPERS is very PF and C heavy, has no depth at PG, SG, or SF. We shall see if that changes as the season goes on but this is not that uncommon actually as PFs and Cs tend to score the most in NFA. It really comes down to personal preference for each Foul Club owner.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see how these roster's change throughout the season and I might blog about that at certain points during the season to see how rosters shape up compared to these draft day rosters. It's really hard to project NFA stats, so I won't. But given past trends, the team with DeMarcus Cousins usually wins so Oww Ming's Flagrants should be penciled in as the preseason favorite.

Here's too a great season. May your fouls be flagrant and your ejections many!
