Week 5 Roundup: Bench Techy Edition

It came to my attention over the weekend as I had a meeting with the GM of Arlington Assaulters that there are 2 definitions for Bench Techy:

Bench Techy:
1. Having a player on your bench in a given week receive a techy.
2. When a coach or player on the bench in real life receives a techy.

The first can be used for flagrant fouls, ejections, and foul outs as well for that matter. While it will most likely be a long time before we can have coaches in the NFA, a lot of managers still use bench techy as referring to definition number 2. I am thinking that both definitions be acceptable unless people have any objections. I can add this officially to the glossary in a few days.

With that out of teh way let's get to the roundup:

Stat Corrections
-Nerlens Noel had an ejection given to him retoractive to November 7th. F'N FLOPPERS did not have him active so he does not gain 100 points.
-Draymond Green had a techy taken away from him retroactive to November 22nd. Rodman'sWeddingDress had him active that day so he loses 40 points.

Yes, you read that first one right. We have either the first or second retroactive ejection in NFA history (I vaguely remember seeing this once before, but I believe it was to a free agent). I have never seen this with a techy being given to someone who already had 1 and today is no different. It appears that Noel was given a flagrant 1 in the game but upon further review they upgraded it to a flagrant 2, thus resulting in an ejection. Now, it's not like the player was ejected in that game or in a game later as a result of this, but it must just go on their NFA permanent record (and perhaps for fine purposes).

Standings as of November 30, 2015

1. Arlington Assaulters- 2655 pts (+575)
2. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 2075 (+320)
3. Oww Ming's Flagrants 1975 (+395)
4. They Call Me Gamblor- 1740 (+405)
5. Pgastan FC- 1665 (+465)
6. F'N FLOPPERS 1605 (+360)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 1580 (+395)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 1400 (+270)

Arlington Assaulters continues to demolish the league with another 500+ point week, this is truly incredible. Who is gonna have a down week first, Arlington Assaulters or the Golden State Warriors? Rodman'sWeddingDress had a decent 320 week but is now only 100 points ahead of 3rd who had a nice 395 point week. They Call me Gamblor had a 405 point week to remain in 4th. Pgastan Foul Club, and their new GM, had an excellent 465 point week in his first full week of GM duties. Unfortunately for PFC, NFA scores in general are up a lot this week so a 400+ point week doesn't have the buying power it used to have in years past. That 465 point week was enough for him to pass F'N FLOPPERS (actually he had 210 points on November 25th and went from 7th to 4th), who put up a respectable 360 point week despite falling to 6th. Ohsnappers!!! had a nice 395 point week as well but remains in 7th albeit only 25 points behind 6th. Finally, bringing up the rear, Baltimore Hitsquad had the worst week of the foul clubs with 270 points.

Transactions:
-F'N FLOPPERS added Rodney Hood and dropped Richard Jefferson on November 23rd
-Ohsnappers!!! added Richard Jefferson and dropped Kevin Seraphin on November 23rd
-Ohsnappers!!! added Marvin Williams and dropped Klay Thompson on November 23rd
-They Call Me Gamblor added Rudy Gobert and dropped Timofey Mozgov on November 26th
-Pgastan FC added OJ Mayo and dropped Michael Carter-Williams on November 27th
-Pgastan FC added Gerald Green and dropped Ian Mahinmi on November 27th

Well that's a pretty long update, but that's all I got for now.

Week 4 Roundup: Analytics Edition

With the hire of Nick Nalkin as GM for PFC, this could potentially alter how foul clubs evaluate talent . He was nice enough to share a little information with me to post on the blog. Looking over the past 2 years, here is the top fouler:

DeMarcus Cousins: It should be no surprise that DeMarcus Cousins is the best fouler in the game. What is surprising is how much better he is than number 2. He averages 36.88 points per game over the 2 years while playing 130 games (out of a possible 164). 2nd place, for comparison, came in with 28.31 points per game while 3rd was 26.78 points per game.

Well, that was all the information he was willing to disclose so lets get to the update.

Stat Corrections
-Jonas Valanciunas had a techy taken away from him retroactive to November 13th. Pgastan FC had him active that day so he loses 40 points.

Standings as of November 23, 2015

1. Arlington Assaulters- 2080 pts (+580)
2. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 1755 (+450)
3. Oww Ming's Flagrants 1580 (+290)
4. They Call Me Gamblor- 1335 (+250)
5. F'N FLOPPERS 1245 (+310)
6. Pgastan FC- 1200 (+275)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 1185 (+325)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 1130 (+375)

Baltimore Hitsquad continues to close the gap on 7th place with a very respectable 375 points. Ohsnappers!!! is clinging to 7th place after putting up 325 points for the second consecutive week. Pgastan FC remained at 6th with 1200 points falling further behind F'N FLOPPERS who now has 1245 points. They put up 275 points and 310 points respectively. They Call Me Gamblor is only 90 points ahead of 5th now after only scoring 250 points this week to bring his total to 1335.

Oww Ming's Flagrants put up 290 to remain in 3rd with 1580. Rodman'sWeddingDress put up 450 points to stay in 2nd, but could not gain any ground on 1st. Arlington Assaulters put up a whopping 580 points to continue his hot start of the NFA season. This easily could be the best start to an NFA season, unfortunately we only started keeping records on the NFA on a weekly basis last year, so really nothing to compare this too. Last year Rodman'sWeddingDress was leading the league through 4 weeks with 1755 points.

Transactions:
-F'N FLOPPERS added Bismack Biyombo and dropped Jason Thompson on November 19th
-F'N FLOPPERS added Al-Farouq Aminu and dropped Josh Smith on November 19th
-Pgastan FC added Michael Carter-Williams and dropped Jerryd Bayless on November 21st
-Pgastan FC added Khris Middleton and dropped George Hill on November 21st
-Pgastan FC added Ian Mahinmi and dropped Greg Monroe on November 21st
-Pgastan FC added Josh Smith on November 22nd
-F'N FLOPPERS added Richard Jefferson and dropped Ben McLemore on November 22nd
-F'N FLOPPERS added Deron Williams and dropped John Wall on November 22nd

Well that's it for now. Unfortunately, there are no NFA games on Thanksgiving so we'll be forced to watch the lame NFL... at least the Bears play.

Pgastan FC Announces New GM

Pgastan Foul Club of the National Foul Association has announced their new GM hire at a press conference today. Here's what Team Owner and President Don Cage said at the introduction:

I am pleased to announce the 2nd GM in the history of Pgastan Foul Club is Nick Nalkin. Nick hails from Greenland but came to the States to pursue an Economics degree at Harvard University. We decided to switch things up and try to bring analytics into the NFA so that narrowed our search down quite a bit. A lot of GMS simply make their draft transactions based on a one-year sample or if a fouler gets hot and gets a lot of performance fouls in quick succession. We want to eliminate the flukyness of the NFA and therefore are going to try and analyze foulers like no one has ever done before. I will now hand the microphone over to Nick who has prepared a few words.

Nick Nalkin speaking at the press conference:

I had never heard of the sport of fouling growing up in Greenland, a Danish territory of just over 56,000 people. When I came to Boston for University, I became infatuated with the sport and decided that could be a career path for me. I had always dreamed of being a GM for a famous Football Club, or Soccer as you guys call it, but this GM position opened up and I decided to throw my name in the hat. I am excited about the opportunity ahead of me and will try my best to blaze new trails of fouler evaluation in the NFA. Thank you, I will not be taking questions at this time.

Of course, only time will tell if this hire works out but, if you're a neutral or just like seeing great fouling this has to be exciting news. Unfortunately, we might not see the true results of this GM until next year when he can draft the team itself instead of trying to fix the mess left behind from Denny McDonk.

Check back tomorrow for the Week 4 Roundup.

BREAKING: Pgastan Foul Club Fires GM

In a shocking move announced this afternoon at a press conference moments ago by owner and team president Don Cage, Pgastan Foul Club has fired their longtime (in fact only) GM, Denny McDonk. Don Cage gave the following statement:

When in the course of NFA events, it becomes necessary for a foul club to dissolve their scouting and operational bands which have connected them with one person in particular in order to assume a new direction for the club.

I am here to announce that Denny McDonk has been relieved of his General Manager duties effective immediately.  I would first like to thank Denny for his great leadership throughout his 6+ years as PFC GM. He lead us to the NFA championship in the leagues inaugural season (2009-2010) as well as a title 3 years later (2012-2013). However, last year was the first year in which this club failed to place in the top 3 and after a few questionable draft picks this year plus a dismal start to the 2015-2016 season, I made the decision to dismiss Denny of his duties.

As is the case with most sporting competitions sometimes leadership, whether at the coaching level or GM level, simply becomes stale and change is simply needed. I have a few GM candidates in mind and I should be back here in a few days to announce a new GM hire for PFC. PFC has a strong tradition of fouling and we need to maintain that tradition. We don't want to become the Chicago Fire of the NFA.

Thank You

Wow! Well, there you have it. PFC has fired their GM and it appears to be close to announcing a new GM to replace Denny.

Week 3 Roundup: USS Walter Mondale Edition

"It's a Laundry Ship." (Simpsons reference). I am still working with Yahoo to see if they can resolve the disappearing techy issue.

Stat Corrections:
Only one stat correction but that player is not on an active Foul Club roster so it has no bearing on the standings.

Standings as of November 16, 2015:

1. Arlington Assaulters- 1500 pts (+550)
2. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 1305 (+585)
3. Oww Ming's Flagrants 1290 (+520)
4. They Call Me Gamblor- 1085 (+365)
5. F'N FLOPPERS 935 (+375)
6. Pgastan FC- 925 (+255)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 860 (+325)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 755(+240)

Arlington Assaulters continues his assault on the National Foul Association with a 550 point week. However, that wasn't even the best week, that was accomplished by Rodman'sWeddingDress who put up 585 points. Though, given AAs huge lead he is still 195 points behind 1st. Oww Ming's Flagrants also had a nice week putting up 520 points but fell to 3rd given the score by RWD mentioned above. They Call Me Gamblor only put up 365 points but is still in 4th. F'N FLOPPERS put up 375 points and passed Pgastan FC who only put up 255 points. They are in 5th and 6th respectively. Ohsnappers!!! put up 325 and remains in 7th while Baltimore Hitsquad put up 240 points to remain in 6th.

Transactions:
-Ohsnappers!!! added Austin Rivers and dropped OJ Mayo on November 12th
-Ohsnappers!!! added Mason Plumlee and dropped Tyler Zeller on November 15th
-Pgastan FC added Jerryd Bayless and dropped Greg Monroe on November 15th

Well that's it for this week.

Week 2 Roundup: Defensive 3-Second Violation Edition

As you may have read in my last post, Yahoo! is showing a techy for Defensive 3-second violations on stat donker but come morning, the techy is gone. I contacted Yahoo! this morning and they want me to take a screenshot the next time it happens and then email it to them, so they can have their engineer's look into it. I will forward the email I got from them to the league so everyone can see it. Anyway, let's take a look at what transpired this past week in the National Foul Association.

Stat Corrections
-J.R. Smith had a techy taken away from him retroactive to October 27th. Rodman'sWeddingDress had him active that week so he loses 40 points.

Standings as of November 9, 2015:

1. Arlington Assaulters- 950 pts (+525)
2. Oww Ming's Flagrants 770 (+385)
3. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 720 (+270)
3. They Call Me Gamblor- 720 (+375)
5. Pgastan FC- 670 (+400)
6. F'N FLOPPERS 560 (+300)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 535 (+290)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 515 (+340)

Arlington Assaulters puts up a league-leading 525 points this week to go 180 points clear of 2nd place. Oww Ming's Flagrants is pretty consistent through 2 weeks, putting up 385 points in both of the first 2 weeks of the season. After a 450 point week in week 1, Rodman'sWeddingDress only put up 270 points, which was the lowest this week, and is in a tie for 3rd at 720 points. The team tied with him is They Call Me Gamblor who had a decent 375 point week. Pgastan FC had a decent last few days in the week which was enough to get him 400 points for the week which was 2nd most this week. Unfortunately, he is still stuck in 5th. F'N FLOPPERS put up 300 points this week but remains in 6th. Ohsnappers!!! put up 290 but is still in 7th but within stirking distance of 6th. Finally, Baltimore Hitsquad has started really slow (very uncharacteristic of him) and remains in 8th but is slowly making ground on the rest of the Association.

It's a little early to start analyzing trends but so far it looks like we have the top half of hte league and the bottom half, though Arlington Assaulters had a huge day yesterday to gain some separation from 2nd and Pgastan FC had a good day yesterday to separate himself from 6th.

Transactions:
-Rodman'sWeddingDress added Kosta Koufos and dropped Tyler Hansborough on November 6th
-Pgastan FC added Greg Monroe and dropped Evan Turner on November 6th
-Pgastan FC added Carmelo Anthony and dropped Michael Carter-Williams on November 6th
-Rodman'sWeddingDress added Jameer Nelson and dropped Spencer Hawes on November 8th
-F'N FLOPPERS added Kristaps Porzingis and dropped Carlos Boozer on November 8th
-F'N FLOPPERS added Clint Capela and dropped Kendrick Perkins on November 8th

Well that's it for this week.

Yahoo! and the Curious Case of the Dissapearing Techy

It's only been 10 days since the start of the NFA season but already we have some confusion and last night was the latest example. Hassan Whiteside had a techy earlier in the game and then got into a little scuffle with Paul George where both were assessed techies. This resulted in Whiteside's 2nd techy of the night, or so it seemed. This happened to Vucevic on Wednesday night, where he had 2 techies but when we checked the league standings in the morning he had none!

So, since this is the 3rd time this has happened (I can't remember the player this happened to in the first week), I decided to do some sleuthing. The NBA box score lists 2 techies for Whiteside and Vucevic for this games but Yahoo!'s box score only lists one. I found a full play-by-play on cbssports.com and the techies in question appear to be defensive 3-second violations.

Now this is where I had to consult the NBA Rule book:

https://turnernbahangtime.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/2014-15-nba-rule-book.pdf

There are numerous ways one can be assessed a techy:
1. Excessive Timeouts
2. Delay of Game
3. Number of Players
4. Basket-Ring, Backboard, or Support
5. Conduct
6. Fighting Fouls

Now the rules say you can only be ejected for unsportsmanlike technical fouls and that:

"A technical foul for (1) delay of game, (2) coaches box violation, (3) defensive 3-seconds, (4) having a team total of more or less than 5 players when the ball becomes alive, (5) a player hanging on the basket ring or backboard, (6) participation in the game when not on the team's active list, or (7) shattering the backboard or making the rim unplayable during the game (Comments on the Rules---G) is not considered an act of unsportsmanlike conduct)."

So this answers why the players weren't ejected in their games but doesn't answer why Yahoo! isn't counting them as technical fouls... or does it? Yahoo! is probably only counting technical fouls for unsportsmanlike acts. What constitutes an unsportsmanlike act you say? Here is what it says in the Rule book:

"A technical foul shall be assess for unsportsmanlike tactics such as:
(1) Disrespectfully addressing an official
(2) Physically contacting an official
(3) Overt actions indicating resentment to a call
(4) Use of Profanity
(5) A coach entering onto the court without permission of an official
(6) A deliberately thrown elbow or any attempted physical contact with no contact involved
(7) Taunting"

You can read more on Technical fouls in the rule book starting at page 39

This actually makes sense as I would assume defensive 3-second violations happen pretty frequently and if that was the case there would be a lot more techies in NFA. Now why these techies are coming up in stat donker, I don't know but I think this answers all of our concerns for the most part. It just means it might be a little frustrating to track techies this season.

Check back Monday Night for the weekly roundup.

Week 1 Roundup: Before & After Edition

Since both Paul George and George Hill were picked up this week after coming out of the gate blazing (each with 2 techies in the first week), I kept thinking that would make a great Wheel of Fortune Before & After puzzle: Paul George Hill. Anyway, let's take a look at what transpired in the first week.

Stat Corrections:
There were no stat corrections in the first week of the season.

Standings as of November 2, 2015:

1. Rodman'sWeddingDress- 450 (+450)
2. Arlington Assaulters- 425 pts (+425)
3. Oww Ming's Flagrants 385 (+385)
4. They Call Me Gamblor- 345 (+345)
5. Pgastan FC- 270 (+270)
6. F'N FLOPPERS 260 (+260)
7. Ohsnappers!!!- 245 (+245)
8. Baltimore Hitsquad- 175  (+175)

With all 8 teams returning from last season not much to update on the standings as we are only 6 days into the NFA season. However, Dis Is Dat Donk Ball did change its name to Ohsnappers!!!, we'll see if the aesthetic change does anything to motivate his foulers. Being that the NFA season has just and the crapshoot nature of NFA I will refrain from analysis this week as we wait for the dust to settle after the draft.

Transactions:
-Pgastan FC added Michael Carter-Williams and dropped OJ Mayo on October 26th
-Rodman'sWeddingDress added Tristan Thompson and dropped Joakim Noah on October 27th
-Ohsnappers!!! added OJ Mayo and dropped Jimmy Butler on October 29th
-Ohsnappers!!! added Joakim Noah and dropped Al Horford on October 29th
-Arlington Assaulters dropped Amar'e Stoudemire on November 1st
-Arlington Assaulters added Paul George and dropped Dion Waiters on November 1st
-Pgastan FC added George Hill and dropped Jason Smith on November 1st
-Ohsnappers!!! added Jared Sullinger and dropped Quincy Acy on November 1st
-Ohsnappers!!! added Hollis Thompson and dropped Kawhi Leonard on November 1st

Well, as you can see, 4 teams have made moves, Ohsnappers!!! being the most active as he was the one team that missed the draft and didn't pre-rank his foulers. We shall see how these moves pan out over the course of the NFA season.

Remember, the NFA is a marathon not a sprint.
